Uppermill is a picturesque town located in Saddleworth, close to Oldham and Manchester. The town falls under the administrative district of Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council and within the county of Greater Manchester. The town and surrounding countryside is a well established day or weekend tourist destination with many local guesthouses, hotels and accommodation options and it is a popular residential area for those working in Oldham or the city of Manchester. Oldham is an easy commute by car or bus, whilst getting to Manchester is only slightly more time consuming, the best option involving a short walk to the nearest train station which is in the nearby village of Greenfield.

Events and Places to Visit

The Saddleworh Museum charts the history of the area and hosts many art and heritage exhibitions

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal passes through the centre of Uppermill. The section where it passes the museum is a central point in the town and many local walks follow, at least in part, the route of the towpath.

The Brownhill Countryside Centre is located just outside of Uppermill centre, on the road from Delph

Den Lane Quarry and Ladcastle Quarry are sites of special scienific interest

The Whit Friday Brass Band Contest draws bands from all around the country and thousands of supporters and spectators to the area each year. It is followed by a Beer Walk. The Rushcart Festival sees the decorated rushcart drawn through the streets accompanied by groups of morris men.

As Uppermill is located on the western slopes of the Pennines it offers some exceptional hill and fell walking. The local branch of Mountain Rescue is based at The Cross Keys, close to Saddleworth church
